New Zealand River Granted Legal Status as a Person

The Whanganui River in New Zealand has become the first landmark in the world to be recognized as a living entity.

After a 170-year battle the river now has all the corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a legal person.

The legislation recognizes the deep spiritual connection between the river’s traditional owners (iwi) and will help to protect its future.
