New hope for patients with locked-in syndrome

Patients suffering from locked-in syndrome – a condition where although conscious they are fully paralyzed – may soon be able to communicate using a recently developed brain scanner. An initial study of four patients afflicted with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), showed positive results with more research underway.
